It all started with a spreadsheet from my sister …

Well, it truly started with a romantic Valentine’s date, but when I told my sister, Ani, that I was pregnant the first thing she did was send a spreadsheet. I mean, first hoorays and congratulations, then there was a spreadsheet. 

“Baby gear for laurel/john” listed must-haves to register for to get ready for my very first baby. As with all my sister’s spreadsheets, it was a thing of beauty. She’s a spreadsheet master (yes, family visits to her house are often organized via spreadsheet and always delightful). Plus, she’s successfully raising two of the most charmingly sweet kids I know, so I trust her parenting tips with all my heart.

Next came the research phase. I used that spreadsheet to craft my registry, researched each item on websites, forums, a baby gear book and calls to my sister for additional guidance – did you really use a nursing pillow? What brand was your breast pump?

Then came the child. Her name is Luna and she’s an angel from heaven. She’s so cute I could puke, and her snuggles are just the sweetest. Plus, she’s helped me figure out what I got right on that registry (baby loves her swaddle) and what I got wrong (why is this diaper bag bigger than she is?)

Now, when I hear a pal is having a kid I’m more full of hoorays and congrats than ever before because I know how magical babies really are, and then I send them the spreadsheet (with my added notes).
